Mindfulness, Courtesy, and Kindness – BionicOldGuy

Courtesy stems from mindfulness. Only through being mindful can we more readily take advantage of the endless opportunities to engage others courteously. The true test of courtesy is how we connect and engage when we don’t necessarily get the response we are looking for or when things don’t go exactly as planned -Orly Wahba (https://www.lifevestinside.com/).

It’s easier to be courteous when you’re not distracted. A great example of this is driving. Many people behave more discourteously to other drivers, pedestrians, or bicyclists than they would if they weren’t in their cars. This can be because of thinking of multiple things at once like what to do when you get to work or what’s the next errand to run. There is a great Disney cartoon where Goofy is a polite neighbor, husband, and father, until the Jekyll and Hyde transformation that occurs when he gets behind the wheel.

For me. this isn’t just more likely to occur driving, it’s anytime I’m not fully present to those around me.

Mindfulness also helps us behave more kindly to other people. The combination has been referred to by the beautiful term “kindfulness“.
